Our Story

Baking in the wee hours from our kitchen on the Danforth since 2009, we are as committed to our community as we are to the art of the homemade.

What began as a foray into artisanal bread and small-town Ontario inspired sweets, has since grown into a diverse and extensive offering of house-made goods: gourmet pastries, sweet and savoury pies, tarts, quiche, custom cakes, hearty soups, frozen take-home meals, and our now famous (and locally beloved) breakfast sandwiches.

We are wholeheartedly a family operation with our matriarch at the helm. Guided firmly by principals of quality and sustainability, we do things at a bit of a different pace than other commercial bakeries may. Our goal is to put the senses first; to take you back to childhood in your grandmothers kitchen. We do one bake per day — European style. We aim to sell out and we usually do.

Sustainable practices

At Dough, we are committed to a more equitable and ecologically balanced future. We come by it honestly.

Our owner/founder Tracy was on the front lines of the organic food movement in the early 90s, and Oonagh, her daughter turned biz partner, has an MA in Environmental Ethics. These values are as central to our business as they are to our family.

At the shop -- just as at home -- we are in it for small, slow, localized food production. We aim for zero food waste every single day and work hard to meaningfully challenge the harmful culture of convenience that has latched itself onto our food sector.

Any leftovers we generate are donated, gifted, sold at discount, or repurposed. We partner with local fruit and veggie vendors to purchase near spoiled stock. We are slightly obsessed with waste streams and sorting. We privately recycle the single use plastics that we accumulate (ie. receipt rolls, pull tabs, and plastic cables). We take composting very seriously. Our takeout coffee cups and lids are entirely compostable. We are all for a BYO packaging world.

We know there is always room for improvement, so we welcome new ideas and love it when our customers get enthusiastic about sustainability too. Our motto these days is: Reduce Reuse Reduce. We know we’re not perfect, but we are 100% committed to leaving the food industry better than we found it.
